When the weather turns cold, and all the lakes freeze, the people of Scotland, which is where Mac is from, begin to gather for their favorite game: curling! The thrill of throwing huge chunks of rock down slippery sheets of ice is pretty exciting, especially if you are wearing a kilt! What's a kilt? It is one of the way you can tell if someone is from Scotland! A kilt is a special kind of skirt, that men and women wear. The fabric is woven from wool (from all the sheep on the hillsides!) and dyed in a pattern called "tartan". Mac's scarf is a tartan pattern named for the McDougall clan, so it is called a McDougall tartan!Hmmm....back to curling.
Curling is a really fun game, and Mac loves to watch, and he wishes he could play. Unfortunately, he would need to be able to use a broom to sweep the ice, and as he doesn't have hands, just paws, he cannot! Once he tried licking the ice, but that didn't work very well.
Instead of playing, Mac cheers on his favorite team, the Canadian Mens Olympic Curlers. He also likes going to the McDougall United Church family curling fun spiel in February. Maybe this year, you will be there!
ps: the trophy is one that Rev. Dave's team won in the clergy curling league in Calgary last year! Mac likes to make sure the trophy shines!
